Making sweet memories
Sherbet Fountain, Black Jack, Fruit Salad, Refreshers, Dip Dabs… these will be familiar names to people of all ages and for those of a certain generation will no doubt conjure up fond memories of childhood and trips to the sweet shop clutching precious pennies.
Well, these popular sweets are still going strong with a major presence on retailers’ (and corner shop) shelves across the globe. Harman’s are proud to say we’ve been working with British-based company Tangerine Confectionery, owner of these famous names and a broad portfolio of other sweet treats, since 2015, when we won a tender to manage on-site catering at four of Tangerine’s factories.
Hundreds of years of heritage
The Tangerine team work tirelessly around the clock to deliver top quality confectionery using a combination of traditional manufacturing methods and state of the art operations at their factories in Blackpool, Liverpool, Cleckheaton, Pontefract and York. Strong relationships with the UK’s largest retailers (providing both branded and own label products) see Tangerine operating across a variety of retail channels including grocery, wholesalers, independents and forecourts.
The highly competitive company already has a strong international presence with key markets including Australia, Canada, Europe and the Middle East, and has its sights set on further development overseas as the popularity of classic retro goodies increases, particularly in the ex-pat sector.
Adding value for employees
These days, employee health and wellbeing is at the forefront of most businesses’ vision and values, whatever the nature of their trade. The Tangerine Confectionery management team understand how important on-site catering is to their workforce, as do the Harman’s team.
Mike Dennison, Tangerine’s Procurement Category Manager – Indirects, said: “Harman’s tender proposal was very impressive at the outset and they have worked really well with us over the past few years, they are full of good ideas and are always prepared to go the extra mile.
“They’ve put excellent processes in place and their staff are very well trained. We have regular meetings and reviews, which works really well for everyone. Erika, Grant and the team are all extremely friendly, willing and open to feedback. We know that if something needs doing, they can be relied on to do it.”
Working collaboratively, we ensure Tangerine’s staff receive a high quality canteen service with a varied selection of hot and cold beverages, meals and snacks that are available across the majority of the factory shifts.
“We respond to each individual workforce by ensuring we have local menus in each factory,” Mike explained. “The Yorkshire and Lancashire sites have their own specialties.
The canteen is a great area for people to relax, socialise and enjoy their breaktimes. A lot of contractors make a point of arriving early so they can tuck into a tasty lunch before starting work. There’s a constant stream of people making use of the canteen service, it’s a significant part of their working day and it’s important we get it right,” he added.
